Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away at 89 on Monday morning in Kolkata. He was admitted to the hospital days before due to a kidney ailment.
Chatterjee had been visiting the hospital for more than 2 months as he was undergoing dialysis. He was put on life support following which he suffered a minor heart attack. His condition became critical on Sunday.
Chatterjee was the key leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was a ten-time member of Lok Sabha. He even became the speaker in 2004. However, he was later expelled by his party after he refused to step down and vote against the government during a trust vote.
