Home > News Shots > India newsGlenmark Pharmaceuticals has received the required approval from the Drug Controller General of India to manufacture the anti-viral drug to treat COVID-19 patients. The drug is to be available in the marker in the coming week.
Favipiravir is the drug which has been approved in Japan for treating influenza. All the clinical trials have only resulted in a positive outcome. The medicine is to be branded as FabiFlu which will be for consuming orally. The use is restricted to those with mild to moderate cases. However, patients are required to sign a consent form before commencing the treatment.
“Glenmark filed the product for clinical trial with India’s drug regulator DCGI and became the first pharmaceutical company in India to receive approval for conducting phase 3 clinical trial on mild to moderate COVID-19 patients,” the press release said.
The drug reduces the viral load in the body within 4 days but the medication can only be purchased with prescriptions. It will be priced at Rs.103 per tablet.
According to the studies conducted by China, Russia, and Japan, the use of this anti-viral drug has reduced the viral load quickly when compared to the others.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has done an end-to-end synthesis of Favipiravir in April and they provided the approvals to conduct trials with the drug.
