Elephant shot dead, shooter absconding

Is human–elephant conflict on the rise? Yes, it seems to be and has been increasing since few years. There has also been very few measures to this problem. A recent incident will shock you where an elephant's body was found by forest officials in Palamangala village of Kodagu district after it was shot dead by an unknown person.

According to The News Minute, the officials believe that the elephant was shot dead using a single-barrel gun. "We received information from local residents that an elephant's body had been found. When we checked the body, there was a visible bullet wound and we tried to retrace the steps of the elephant by following the blood trail, we found that it led to a house nearby but the person accused of shooting the elephant was not there. He is absconding," said Gopal, a forest officer in the Virajpet range.

After the post-morten report it stated that, the elephant was shot down with old stock of bullets and its difficult to get these bullet in the market.

According to officials, this elephant's death comes days after a wounded elephant was rescued and treated by forest officials in the same village. While they believe that it might be the same elephant that has been killed.
