The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Thursday that it is likely to launch the Coronavirus vaccine it developed in partnership with Hyderabad- based Bharat Biotech (COVAXIN) for public to use by August 15.

ICMR reportedly stated it in an internal letter written to Bharat Biotech asking for fast-tracking of the indigenous vaccine.

"It is envisaged to launch the vaccine for public health use latest by 15th August 2020 after completion of all clinical trials. BBIL is working expeditiously to meet the target, however, final outcome will depend on the cooperation of all clinical trial sites involved in this project," the letter says.

However, Bharat Biotech, the company that is working in partnership with ICMR, has not commented on the subject.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held a high- level meeting to discuss the latest developments regarding the indigenous vaccine.

According to Hindustan Times’ report, “The clinical trials will be held in 12 institutes across the country. The ICMR has asked these institutes to fast-track clinical trials of the vaccine as it is being considered as one of the ‘top priority projects’ which are being ‘monitored at the topmost level of the government’.”
