A college in the state of Odisha has landed itself into a tricky situation after a girls' hostel in the campus put up a notice, barring female students from 'talking to boys standing on the side of the road'. The bizarre diktat has caught the attention of numerous media organisations.

The matter, which has come to light from the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), has left the internet in splits.

Located near Sambalpur in Odisha, the university issued a statement stating that they stand by the notice issued by the Rohini Hall of Residence, one of the college's five girls' hostels.

According to a report in Times of India, the notice read, "As directed by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, the boarders of the Rohini Hall of Residence are directed not to talk with boys students on the roadside." In addition, the notice also mentions that failure to adhere to the direction will result in punishment.

Defending the bizarre diktat, VSSUT public relations in-charge, Professor PC Swain said that the notice was issued to ensure "the security of the girls".
