10 workers buried alive as huge mud heap collapses

In an unfortunate incident, ten people including some women labourers were killed after a huge mound of mud fell on them at a work site in Telangana's Narayanpet district. They were all employed under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (MGNREGP) scheme.

The incident occurred today afternoon where more than a hundred labourers were engaged in digging earth for the construction of an irrigation channel at Edmartippa hillock in Tileru village. When suddenly a huge quantity of mud fell on them at the worksite following which they were buried alive.

According to Hindustan Times, some of the workers took shelter in the shadow of a mound of earth to protect themselves from the scorching sun when it suddenly collapsed on them. In minutes, the local authorities rushed to the site and took out 10 bodies with the help of villagers. Meanwhile, five other workers managed to escape. Some of them received severe injuries and are being treated at a local hospital.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed deep shock and anguish over the incident which he described as "unfortunate." He also instructed officials to provide all possible medical care to those injured in the incident.
