Home > News Shots > Fun Facts newsThis 7th grade maths question is quizzing the internet and people are divided over how many squares they see. Are you up for the challenge? Look at the picture, how many squares do you see? Once you are done counting, scroll down to see if you have gotten it right.
A square is a shape that has four sides with the same length. The angles between those sides must be 90 degrees.
It is harder than it looks. But here is the solution. So how many squares are in the picture? The correct answer is 40. If you haven't found them all, don't get upset because it takes a lot of practice to see them. Let's have a look:
The outside lines form 1 big square. (4 x 4 boxes). Then, there are 4 squares consisting of 3 x 3 boxes. If you look closely, you will find 9 squares consisting of 2 x2 boxes. And if we go even smaller, there are 18 squares made out of just one box, including the 2 small squares overlaying the grid. And then of course, the overlaying squares form 8 tiny squares by intersecting the lines.
So that's how you get 40 squares in total. Did you find all of them?
