Amid Layoffs, Amazon India To Hire 50,000 Employees To Surge In Demand
Home > News Shots > Business newsAt a time when many companies have announced layoffs amid the coronavirus crisis, E-commerce giant Amazon India has announced that it has opened around 50,000 seasonal roles to meet the surge in demand.
They are offering job opportunities across its fulfilment and delivery networks in India to meet the surge in demand for online ordering. This big news comes days after the government allowed e-commerce firms to deliver all products across the country.
“We are creating work opportunities for close to 50,000 seasonal associates across our fulfilment and delivery network. This will also keep as many people as possible working during this pandemic while providing a safe work environment for them,” said Akhil Saxena, vice-president of Customer Fulfilment Operations for APAC, MENA & LATAM at Amazon.
Amid the economic crisis, Amazon, has been facing a shortage of on-ground staff owing to a large displacement of workers due to the coronavirus pandemic. They company has over the past two months recovered its fulfilment and delivery capabilities.
Meanwhile, Amazon Senior Vice President and Country Manager Amit Agarwal took to social media and tweeted that the additional manpower would help Amazon “meet the surge in demand and to provide critical service in this difficult time.”
As per Economic Times report, in the US, where Amazon has seen a major surge in ordering due to the pandemic, the company has hired 175,000 additional workers. While in India, the company has nearly doubled the pay of delivery and warehouse workers.
