Amazon and BigBasket To Deliver Liquor In India: Report
Home > News Shots > Business newsWith lockdown being extended week by week, e-commerce giant Amazon and grocery delivery platform BigBasket have reportedly given a nod to deliver alcohol in India.
According to a document by Reuters, Amazon.com Inc has secured clearance to deliver alcohol in West Bengal. As per a notice, West Bengal State Beverages Corp, the authorised agency in the state said that Amazon was among the companies found to be eligible for registration with authorities.
Meanwhile, BigBasket has also won approval to deliver alcohol in the state, the notice added. Amazon has been invited to sign a memorandum of understanding with the state, which has not previously been reported.
When Amazon was questioned about this approach, they did not respond to a request for comment even BigBasket also did not respond to a request.
Since its inception, Amazon has expanded its e-commerce operations all over India as people go online to shop for everything from groceries to electronics. Before Amazon and Bigbasket can accept this approach, Swiggy and Zomato, have already started delivering alcohol in some cities last month.
West Bengal is the country's fourth most populous state, which has a population of more than 90 million people.
