Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will be teaming up with writer-director Siddique in Big Brother. Co-starring Sarjano Khalid, Honey Rose, Anoop Menon and Arbaaz Khan in central roles, the film is jointly produced by Shaman International, S Talkies, Vaishaka Cynyma and Carnival Movie Network.

Sachidanandan (Mohanlal), a convict serving double sentence, gets released from jail with the help of his brother Manu (Sarjano Khalid), who, after many unsuccessful pleas to the government, gets help from a mysterious druglord named Edwin Moses to get his brother out. Sachi's homecoming coincides with the marriage of Vishnu (Anoop Menon) and the character played by Honey Rose, with whom Sachidanandan shares a past.

Sachi struggles to adapt to the world around him. As he comes to terms, we get to know that by swatting many flies in his pitch-dark prison cell, Sachi has acquired the superpower of nightvision. This makes Sachi useful for the police force to deploy him in risky commando operations. What follows is a bunch of events which lead Sachi and his team of jailbird avengers (Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Tini Tom and Irshad) to Edwin Moses, prime suspect of the war on drugs led by Vedantham (Arbaaz Khan, out of sync with his lines).

Initially, BB shows some promise. The film makes good use of Sachi's lack of knowledge with outside world, and we see a lot of humourous moments where he stands up every time when someone, including his own family, wishes him a good morning. At that point, even the 'superhuman' twist doesn't feel ridiculous. The makers could've done wonders with this conceit, but instead, it becomes only a mere setup for a few underwhelming action sequences that appear later.

After a point, one might lose patience with the randomness of events. Manu gets kidnapped by another gangster named Shetty (played by Siddique, with an accent). We get to see a thinly veiled romance between Sachi and Arya Shetty (Mirna Menon), as he becomes her go to security guard.

We do not get invested with the characters in due course of the film. The film throws few illogical twists that are not enjoyable and the big reveal at the end rarely comes as a surprise. Mohanlal's charming act and Vishnu Unnikrishnan's witty counters give some respite in this overly complicated film.

BIG BROTHER VIDEO REVIEW

Verdict: Despite Mohanlal's charming presence and its promising ideas, Big Brother ends up not living up to its potential.
