What will you do when no one has your back in the face of danger? Through Courtland Gentry, Netflix's The Gray Man explores the answer to this question. This film marks the reunion of Marvel fame Russo Brothers and Chris Evans after Avengers: Endgame. Alongside Evans, we have Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and Julia Butters in the film.

The Gray Man is a cat-and-mouse game between a rogue CIA agent, Sierra Six aka Courtland Gentry (Gosling) and a sociopathic mercenary, Lloyd Jansen (Evans). When Six comes across a dirty secret of a top CIA official (Page), he becomes the target of a high scale hunt. How Six escapes attempts on his life while trying to save people he cares for forms the crux of the story.

The Russo Brothers directorial is an adaptation of Mark Greaney's 2009-novel The Gray Man. However, the plot of the film has several changes when compared to the book's premise. Most of these changes work well to create a franchise starter, which Netflix's The Gray Man is touted to be. Screenplay writers Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely deserve the kudos for the same.

The Gray Man is everything you would expect from a Russo Brothers movie—from stylishly shot and edited action sequences to the destruction of public property during an intense chase. In fact, some parts of the film will remind you of the Avengers movies, especially the camera work. Cinematography by Stephen F Windon brings out the beauty of film's action sequences.

The Russo Brothers couldn't have gotten a better cast for the film. Ryan Gosling as the spy with a golden heart and a hardcore survivor is convincing. Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, and other supporting cast also showcased good performances. The cake however goes to the irredeemable villain played by Chris Evans. Evans's performance as Lloyd will leave you wondering if this was the same person who played the righteous Captain America.

Another show stealer is Indian Tamil actor Dhanush, who in his brief scenes managed to capture audiences' attention with his badass performance and charm.

Despite the technical prowess of the film and the cast performances, The Gray Man doesn't quite hold the depth to connect with you. You don't see the emotional journey of Gentry or Six in the movie, something that's at the heart of the book that inspired it. This will render the Ryan Gosling starrer hollow, making it just another action film. However, The Gray Man is still a worthy watch this weekend.
