GENTLEMAN MOVIE REVIEW
After 3 back to back impressive films, Yevade Subramanyam, Bhale Bhale Magadivoy and Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha, Nani is back with a love thriller Gentlemen. The film is written and directed by Mohan Krishna Indraganti and produced by Sivalanka Krishna Prasad under Sridevi Movies. Surabhi and Niveda Thomas play the female lead roles while Srinivas Avasarala, Tanikella Bharani, and Rohini are seen playing supporting roles.
It is one of those films that you find it difficult to talk about without giving away any spoilers. The film is intended to keep the audience guessing and even mentioning a one-liner of the plot might spoil the fun of watching. Having said that, we don’t intend to tell you that the story is great. It is nothing but a routine thriller with a few logical loopholes. It intends not to let you know where it heads to but sadly most audiences would always be ahead of the proceedings. This is a major setback especially for a thriller like this filled with twists.
The other drawback with Gentleman is the pace in which it travels especially in the latter half. It doesn’t interest you so much as most scenes are very familiar to us. The love portion in the first half between Surabhi and Nani could satisfy a section of the audience who would want to see the lovable side of Nani. The pre-climax portion is the only better part of the film; it gives you a rush.
Of late Nani has been choosing his scripts wisely. His films have been diverse and interesting and so is his performance in them. Gentleman again is very different from Nani’s previous outings and probably that is the main reason for him to select this film. Here, he has a couple of contrasting roles to play and has given an adequate performance, not overdoing it. Niveda Thomas who makes her Tollywood debut gets a plum role to play. She has done a super impressive show, a performance that is largely satisfying but there are places where she could have underplayed herself.
Mani Sharma heads the music department. The film consists of 4 numbers, all passable ones but the background was very effective. It was energetic and suited the mood very well. The editing was not seamless; few bad jump cuts could have been avoided. PG Vinda’s cinematography provided the grandness to the visuals.
