The Iron Lady of Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016. Here are a few nostalgic moments of her life.

Jayalalithaa was born on 24 February 1948 in Mandya district of the then Mysore State. She was given her grandma's name Koamalavalli. She attended Bishop Cotton Girls' School and Sacred Heart Matriculation School in Chennai.

Jayalalithaa appeared in a Kannada movie named Sri Shaila Mahathme, which released in 1961 and had popular Kannada actor Rajkumar as the lead.

Jayalalithaa joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under the leadership of MGR and served a the Rajya Sabha MP from 1984 to 1989.

AIADMK in alliance with the Indian National Congress won the majority in 2001 elections and Jayalalithaa became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time.

Jayalalithaa was elected as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the 14th state assembly elections and sworn in as the Tamil Nadu CM for the third time in May 2011.

Jayalalithaa was elected as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in June 2016 and became the second Chief Minister after MGR to serve consecutive terms as the CM of Tamil Nadu
