PARIYERUM PERUMAL CAST & CREW
1 of 2
Production: Neelam Productions
Cast: Anandhi, Kathir, Yogi Babu
Direction: Maari Selvaraj
Screenplay: Maari Selvaraj
Story: Maari Selvaraj
Music: Santhosh Narayanan
Background score: Santhosh Narayanan
Cinematography: Sridhar
Editing: RK Selva

Produced by director Pa Ranjith, Pariyerum Perumal is directed by Mari Selvaraj. Kathir and Anandhi play the lead roles while Yogi Babu appears in a supporting role. Santhosh Narayanan has scored the music for this one.

Pariyerum Perumal is a story of companionship. A story with a deep sense of passion for a partner. A simplistic story, that has a heart of it's own! It tracks the relationship between Pariyerum Perumal and his dog, Pariyerum and Jothi Mahalakshmi, Pariyerum and the rest of the world.

It's not a self-claimed love story, but a story that narrates the essence of realism and life. But there is still a love story that exists in this film. It's a love rectangle between the director, actors, cinematographer, and the music director. The liveliness and soul of the film lies in these hands. These safe hands.

There is clarity in the screenplay and there is no exaggeration whatsoever. Though simple, the writing is very strong. The screenplay is engaging, and the characters are well written. The maturity in Mari Selvaraj is quite evident. The comedy is infused in the story and at almost all places, it works! Pariyerum Perumal's character arc is skillfully designed.

Pariyerum Perumal can also be called a musical of sorts. Santhosh Narayanan provides a clean winner in terms of songs and the background score. The standard of scoring is very high and SaNa's work is brilliant. The songs are placed within the screenplay in a manner that lights the screen up. Except for one song, it doesn't result in a lag.

Sridhar, the cinematographer has played a crucial role in the outcome of Pariyerum. The cinematography is very appealing and the single takes have been aced by the actors. The cuts are neat, except for very minute lags. Selva RK can be credited for the same.

Kathir is extremely impressive as the titular character and his box of expressions is deep. His growth and maturity as a performer are just wonderful to watch. 'Kayal' Anandhi has an interesting character to play and she does a convincing job of it. Yogi Babu, as usual, brings the laughs and also plays an important supporting role. An old man who played the role of a killer, was simply menacing and his performance deserves praise as well.

Caste politics, the importance of education, the rise of a man against the various means of oppression, and so much more is conveyed in different layers. To handle this story in a subtle yet engaging manner requires some expertise and being director Ram's erstwhile associate, Mari has definitely acquired these skills from him.

Verdict: Pariyerum Perumal is a well-made film that makes you think and hits you hard right in the soul! Watch it for the team's overall effort

Karuppi
Singers: Santhosh Narayanan
Lyrics: Vivek, Mari Selvaraj

Karuppi was the first single track that released. It seems like this song was written first and only then the music was composed, due to the extremely high lyrical value. Karuppi is not just a song about a dog, it is the cry of an oppressed soul. The lyrical value of Karuppi is high and the song is an abstract. You can interpret it in a lot of ways. Santhosh Narayanan must be appreciated for making sure the song's music doesn't compete with the lyrics. Rather, it just complements the verses and let's Vivek and Mari Selvaraj take the centre-stage.

Vanakkam Vanakkamunga
Singers: Puliyankulam Velmayil, Puliyankulam Kannan
Lyrics: Perumal Vaathiyar

Vanakkam Vanakkamunga looks like a musical storytelling by Puliyankulam Velmayil and Puliyankulam Kannan. Props to Santhosh Narayanan for choosing to experiment with new singers, and they do a convincing job too. The song gives us interesting details about the movie. For example, the first paragraph tells us that the film is set in a place called Puliyankulam. This is another song where the lyrics overshadow the music, but Ganapathy on the Thavil holds his own forte. The funky sounds in the background make this an interesting song to listen.

Potta Kaatil Poovasam
Singers: Yogi Sekar, Fareedha
Lyrics: Vivek

This is a duet track that is sung by Yogi Sekar and Fareedha. The song starts off on a mysterious note, partially due to the nature of the first two songs of the album. You have no idea where the song is going to lead to, until Yogi Sekar's voice glides in to tell you that it going to be a melody. This song keeps getting better as it progresses. While Sekar's singing is great, Fareedha's voice tops that. When you think things can't better, an interlude kicks in, taking you to heaven. If you think heaven is the limit, Ananthu's divine voice in the background tells you there is something more. This one pulls the rug under your feet.

Engum Pugazh Thuvanga
Singers: Folk Marley Anthony Daasan, Kallur Mariappan
Lyrics:  Chinnasamydasan (Vallanadu), Mari Selvaraj

Engum Pugazh Thuvanga is a celebration of the folk genre. Anthony Daasan and Kallur Mariappan both capture the essence of Nellai slang and show us why they are the best in business when it comes to folk songs. While this song has the true flavour of Tirunelveli, and the lyrics tell us the story of a girl who has been lost. The percussion and thavilkeeps the energy of the song high, even though the beats sound repetitive.

Vaa Rayil Vidapolama
Singer: Prithika
Lyrics: Vivek

Vaa Rayil Vidapolama is a song sung by Prithika of Super Singer Junior fame. Santhosh Narayanan has done a tremendous job in utilising the innocence in the voice of the young singer. He's done it before with his daughter Dhee. Prithika's singing is flawless and cute. She manages to pull the strings of your heart, effortlessly. One of the good melody numbers in recent times.

Naan Yaar
Singers: Vijaynarain, Ananthu, Santhosh Narayanan
Lyrics: Mari Selvaraj

Throughout the album, Santhosh Narayanan has worked with relatively unknown singers, barring Anthony Daasan. SaNa's close associates Vijay Narain and Ananthu were only used for backing vocals. This track, Naan Yaar is a fitting finale to this fantastic album. Santhosh, Ananthu, and Vijay Narain come out all guns blazing, and manage to give you goosebumps. It looks as if all three of them have been suppressed from showcasing their full singing potential throughout this album, and this is their last chance to show the world who they are. The lyrics also reflect the same feeling, taking a dig against the people of the upper caste. When everything seems to be lost, and you have nothing more to lose, you become a dangerous beast that goes on a rampage. Naan Yaar? I'm a beast on rampage is the answer.

Verdict: A perfect blend of folk, melody, rap and rock music, empowered by powerful moving lyrics.
