Kuruthi Aattam is director Sri Ganesh's second film after the highly acclaimed 8 Thottakkal. While 8 Thottakkal dealt with complex human emotions through a superb MS Bhaskar, Kuruthi Aattam is more or less a straightforward revenge tale which relies more on action rather than emotions. And for most part the action works aided by a very hero who is very earnest and gives his 100 percent to the role.
I have always felt that Atharvaa is a hero with a lot of potential. He has the ability to score big in the right role. Kuruthi Aattam gives him that chance by giving him the angry young man makeover and he grabs it gleefully. This is easily Atharvaa's best outing after Eetti. This is also Atharvaa's first full fledged action role and he pulls it off.
Priya Bhavani Shankar too does well within the space given to her. A very neat presence in a high octane action film.
Kuruthi Aattam is a tale of two stalwarts of the industry. Sri Ganesh has this knack of writing good roles for seasoned performers. Much like MS Bhaskar in Sri Ganesh's debut, the presence of Radhika Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi elevates Kuruthi Aattam. Radhika has that aura around her and Radha Ravi is mighty impressive as always. The two of them never miss a beat and are flawless in their respective roles.
Vatsan Chakravarthy has put in a lot of effort to look the part. Special kudos for that. He puts in all the yards to give the feel of a worthy opponent.
The best part of the film are the stunts. Excellent stunt work by Vicky. The fight scenes are well choreographed and very raw with Yuvan's BGM. Another major plus is the cinematography by Dinesh Puroshathaman. Though much of the film was shot in Chennai the cinematography ensures that we never miss the essence of Madurai.
There are Ajith references throughout the film as our hero plays an Ajith fan which is sure to earn the applause of the audience.
On the downside though the film relies too much on action making it difficult for the audience to completely invest in the characters and the songs don't to make a lasting impression.
Sri Ganesh's second is his litmus test after the highly acclaimed 8 Thottakkal and he comes with a fairly engaging film. The film does have its flaws but it definitely a decent attempt from a sincere filmmaker.
