Jango is a sci-fi time loop film written and directed by Mano Karthikeyan, and produced by Surendirran Ravi and CV Kumar under the banners Zen Studios and Thirukumaran Entertainment respectively. The film has Satheesh Kumar and Mirnalini Ravi in the lead roles, while Karunakaran, Daniel Annie Pope, Hareesh Peradi, Ramesh Thilak, Velu Prabhakaran and others play supporting roles. It has music by Ghibran and cinematography by Karthik K Thillai.

Gautham (Satheesh Kumar) is one of the best neurosurgeons in the city. After a really bad day, he comes in contact with the radiation of a machine, which traps him in a time loop. This means, he has to live the same day of his life again and again. Once the clock strikes 12, his day will be reset. He learns that his wife Nisha dies at the end of the day, and wants to save her somehow. How he manages to do that, and how he exits the time loop is what Jango is all about.

On a conceptual level, and even on paper, Jango is a fantastic idea, mainly because of the premise it has. The kind of concept naturally has engagement value. This is the first time the concept has been discussed in Tamil Cinema and it has been done with a decent production value. The VFX involving the spaceship and other machines have also been dealt properly.

However, a film that's good on paper doesn't necessarily mean the execution is also good. The film begins with Gautham trying to impress Nisha while she goes on a jog, and from that point itself, there is zero chemistry between the lead pair. In fact his romantic advances seem like stalking. It doesn't give you a cute feel, but give an irritation feel to the audience. These scenes also have logical loopholes like - Gautham's friends keep telling Nisha that he's a top neurosurgeon in the city and girls would be lucky to have a husband like him. But didn't she already know that he's a top surgeon, considering they've married and lived together for a while?

Having spent a considerable time on these scenes, trying to establish the emotional bond between various characters, the film finally jumps into the science zone. Hareesh Peradi plays the antagonist and he's an astrophysicist and biologist specialized in human anatomy. They also say that he is a student of Stephen Hawking, but his character isn't fleshed out properly. He is good in physics and biology is the only thing we know about him.

Sometimes, such poor characterizations can overcome with brilliant performances. But in Jango, barring Karunakaran who appears as a police officer, the rest of the performances are not upto the mark. The lead, Satheesh Kumar certainly needs to widen his emotional range in order to pull off a role like this. He rarely smiles or has outbursts. On the other hand, Mirnalini Ravi is decent as Nisha, and proves that she's gaining experience with each film.

Ghibran's background score is another positive addition to the film, and it tries to cover as many flaws as possible, mainly the dearth of emotions. In other films, when the music is used as a cue to make us emote, it might make the filmmaking look lazy, but here if not for Ghibran's brilliancy, the film would have fallen apart completely. The cinematography provides what is exactly needed for the film, and is decent.

Overall, the film falls short on writing, dialogues, screenplay and performances, while the concept and Ghibran's music alone stand out. Jango misses to impress despite the potential it had. If you're a fan of sci-fi movies, the film can be watched just for the concept of time loop alone.

Verdict: Jango's idea is good on paper, but the execution could have been better. Watch it for the unique concept.
