Director Suresh Krissna talks about his new initiative to screen his film in TV

Director Suresh Krissna of Baasha fame will be doing something new which might usher in a new wave in Kollywood. For the first time in Tamil film industry, he will be releasing a full length feature film in a private TV channel on the 29th of May.

His film is titled Hitler Yengirintho Vanthaan that features Delhi Ganesh, Devayani, Bharath Kalyan with newcomers Arjun and Pavithra. Vignesh is playing a cameo. Ganesh Kumar has handled cinematography while Deva has scored music for Pa.Vijay’s lyrics. The film was shot for 9 days with a budget of 35 lakhs. Suresh Krissna discusses about his novel initiative with behindwoods:

“There is a big vacuum in the industry right now. There are so many films being made and there is hardly a few which emerge triumphant.  I read somewhere that up to March 2016, 54 films were released and only 3 films were successful. This situation is alarming in the sense that genuine talents are not getting the opportunities. There is a big gap.

Now TV channels have also stopped buying films because there is so much uncertainty involved in the fate of a film. This is not a healthy trend.

That’s when I thought of making a commercial film for TV. Now people are looking at Youtube, Web series and the likes.  The latest trend is to make movies for TV channels such as HBO and Star Movies. All reputed directors are doing that. There is an audience watching it and there is a huge budget involved in it.

My suggestion to channels was I will pitch in the subjects and they can choose as they know the winning horse. They can invest around 30-40 lakhs and the property becomes theirs.  There was a  slight hesitation as such things were not attempted earlier. My take was nobody had tried a completely regular commercial cinema for TV. It was always an art film types. I pitched 4-5 subjects. And they selected one. And they gave me this budget and I started working.

For me it will be a huge opening if it works. It will be an IPL for cinema. In case all the channels are open to this idea, there are many channels and there are many opportunities. They need not buy all the films. They have more options and can choose quality films. It will be a parallel industry and if it gets successful, the budgets will increase. Artists may also come forward saying that they cannot test a few subjects for regular theatre audiences but can try it here. Such situations might arise.

I have done fifty films and I have seen everything. This industry has given me so much, love, respect and everything and it is payback time for me. If it works, I have many subjects. I will do mass films when I get the dates of heroes".

We wish you the best Suresh Krissna in your new initiative!
