A write up on films that won the National Award for Best Special Effects

The National Award for Best Special Effects category was instituted in the year 1991. Tamil film industry has always been leading as an example when it comes to VFX. Out of the 21 National Awards for Special Effects, 10 films have been from Tamil excluding Baahubali.
The 10 Tamil films that won National Awards for Special Effects are:

01. Thiruda Thiruda (93)
02. Kadhalan (94)
03. Indian (96)
04. Jeans (98)
05. Hey Ram (99)
06. Aalavandhan (2001)
07. Magic Magic (2002)
08. Anniyan (2005)
09. Sivaji (2007)
10. Enthiran (2010)

Six of these are director Shankar’s films. Similarly post Magadheera, SS Rajamouli has given a great importance for CGI in his films. Three out of his last four films have won National Awards for Special Effects - Magadheera (09), Eega (12), Baahubali (2015).

Now that both Shankar’s 2.0 and SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion are expected to release sometime next year, who will bag the coveted National Award for Special Effects in 2017?

We can for sure expect some visual magic from both the films and the jury in the National Award panel is going to have one torrid time to pick one among the two. Who knows? We might even have a dark horse contesting for the pole spot too.
