A tribute to lyricist Na Muthukumar

Lyricist Na Muthukumar was hugely inspired by his father who was a Tamil teacher in a government school near Kanchipuram. His father was the one who initiated him into the habit of reading since when he was young. It is said that Muthukumar’s dad had a collection of more than 5000 books which kind of sowed the seeds of his literary knowledge.

Although he came into the industry to become a director and was with director Balu Mahendra for a long time, his foray into the filmdom happened in a different capacity, as that of a lyricist in Seeman’s Veera Nadai. This was the first film for which he had penned the lines, but it was released much later.

He had good working equations with all the directors and music composers that he teamed up with. It is said that he was very fast in delivering his verses and sometimes it even happened while travelling from his house to the production company, as short as thirty minutes.

He was also the dialogue writer for Vijay directorial Kireedom and Gautham Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram. It is interesting to note that most of his songs happened for Yuvan Shankar Raja. In 2012 alone, he had penned around 103 songs which is a massive feat. And winning the National Award twice is a commendable accomplishment too. He has won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Lyricist for Ghajini.

Muthukumar’s loss is irreparable and he leaves behind a huge void. We at behindwoods bow our heads in respectful homage to this talented creator! May God give his family the courage to tide over this turbulent phase in their life.
