SWOT analysis of Chiyaan Vikram's Iru Mugan

As we are just a day away from the release of Chiyaan Vikram's Iru Mugan, here we go with the SWOT analysis of this Anand Shankar directorial.

Strengths

Undoubtedly, the first is Chiyaan Vikram - He is the greatest pillar for the film. No second thoughts about his performance and impeccable dedication. The film is assured of getting all praises for the star's  performance.

The multiple act factor - Vikram has tasted success most of the times when he plays dual or triple roles in a film. His earlier films, I and Anniyan are the best examples of this multiple act success.

Anand Shankar - Though it is just his second film, he made a promising debut with Arima Nambi. Also, coming from A.R.Murugadoss's school, he has shown a great potential in his very first film.

Lady Superstar - Nayanthara plays the female lead in the film, who is one of the very few bankable actresses in Kollywood. She has made her place strong in the industry with her natural performance, and Iru Mugan is expected to be another addition to the actress' forte.

Silent scorer Nithya Menen - The cute and bubbly actress who is very much selective in doing films, is playing the role of Aarushi, an assistant to Vikram. For the first time in her Tamil cinema career, she has opted to play an action-oriented role.

Other quality performers - The supporting cast of the movie includes veteran names like Nassar and Thambi Ramaiah. Apart from them, Karunakaran and Rythvika also play pivotal roles in the film. All of them are known for their impactful performances in their films.

Harris Jayaraj's music - His songs have become chartbusters, especially Halena and Iru Mugan Settai. The theme of Iru Mugan too works really good, and by listening to the quirky and lovely musical score in teasers and trailers, looks like Harris is in his elements!

Technical finesse - We all know the experience of cinematographer R.D.Rajasekar. He was the cinematographer for Anand's first movie too. The fight sequences inside the small streets of Broadway were very well shot and the visuals looked very stylish. And now for this film, Anand and Rajasekar have gone a step ahead and have shot in foreign locales. The opening shot in the teaser shows the grandness of the film. Looks highly rich. Editor Bhuvan Srinivasan is an unsung hero, who is known for his sharp and stylish cuts.

Teaser and trailer - The teaser and trailer have acted as a very big strength for the movie and for sure they have worked in favour of the movie's pre-release expectations. The trailer introduced us the new character called Love. With Anand Shankar telling that, Love character will be on the lines of Batman's Joker character, Iru Mugan has garnered good expectation from world cinema fans too.

Weakness

Duration - The film runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes. Around 150 films have released in 2016, and out of that nearly ten films have had a running time of over 150 minutes. Of late, Tamil films have been shorter and crispier, catering to the audience's attention span. It must be a challenge for the makers to keep the audience engaged throughout the 150 minutes.

Love has to click - Agreed that the love character has got a great reception from the audience, the same can backfire in Iru Mugan.  The 'love' character appears to be an experimental one and if it doesn't meet the audience's expectations, it might affect the film's post-release reception.

The first look poster of the film received mixed comments from few people, who claimed that it might be on the lines of popular English Television series Breaking Bad (deals with drug making and drug business). It is also rumored that the film might be an inspiration of 1997 Hollywood science fiction thriller, Face/Off. Interestingly, Iru Mugan's soundtrack has a song number called 'Face Off'. But we will know about this only after the film hits the screens!

Opportunities

A film to showcase Vikram's action talents - His recent three films on the action backdrop, 10 Endradhukulla, Rajapattai and Thaandavam didn't fulfill the expectations, and Chiyaan is yet to make his position stable as an action entertainer. Iru Mugan can prove his mettle, as the star is playing a violent and rugged RAW officer in the film.

Directing Vikram in his second film in itself is a great opportunity, but, Iru Mugan, may help Anand Shankar secure a place in the league of promising directors.

Ladies at action - This might tell other directors that Nayanthara and Nithya Menen can not only be used for romantic scenes but also fight the villains.

The film is having a huge release, not only in Tamil Nadu but also in foreign countries like United States, UK, Malaysia, Singapore and Europe. Vikram's earlier films like 'I' got a humongous opening and this film too has a great opportunity to open big in foreign countries

Chance for the success of Telugu version - Iru Mugan is dubbed in Telugu as 'Inkokkadu'. After "Aparichithudu" (Anniyan), other films of Vikram too had its Telugu dubbed version but didn't fare quite well. But, Inkokkadu has got a good expectation from the Telugu audience and the film has also done a good pre-release business.

Threats

Of course, not just for this film, but for every film; piracy, a bane, that Tamil cinema is cursed with. Behind every film, there are  hundreds and hundreds of hard working actors and technicians. As regards Iru Mugan, it seems Vikram spent hours in make up for the 'love' character. He also practiced and trained hard for a long time to get the eunuch accent and body language right. Hope people will give their support for the team's hard work.

Going by the posters, teaser, trailer, visuals and core concept of the film, looks like Iru Mugan is a film catered to A centre audience, but it is expected that the film will satisfy everyone. We will know the film's trade point of view in another two to three days.
