Megastar Mammootty's Thoppil Joppan is an outright comedy film that tells the love story of the title character. Joppan is a rich 'achayan' from Thoprankudy who becomes an alcoholic after a love failure. The movie is a glimpse into his life and the incidents in it after his family forces him to look into new proposals.
Johny Antony has his own style when it comes to comedy films. Thoppil Joppan too has its moments in spite of the wafer thin and predictable storyline. He has given an achayan touch to make humor more impactful and it has worked fairly well.
Mammootty's elegant look is the highlight of the film and it proclaims that no one can pull off an achayan better than him. The major screen space is shared between Mammootty and his gang which includes Alancier, Sreejith Ravi and Saju Navodaya, and their chemistry is enjoyable. Mamta Mohandas delivers a good performance, but Andrea Jeremiah's acting potentials were not at all utilized in her limited screen time. Salim Kumar and Harisree Asokan perform neatly and help in carrying the movie forward.
The cinematography by Sunoj Velayudhan and the music by Vidyasagar are average and do not have any inbuilt charisma in them. The movie is a commercial comedy film and has elements to satisfy a typical fan. But the lack of depth and energy in the story overshadow the bone tickling comedies.
