Tharangam: The curious case of Kallan Pavithran, director Dominic Arun's first directorial venture starring latest Malayalam sensation Tovino Thomas has many specialities in it starting with Tamil star Dhanush being the producer of the movie. The movie, produced by Dhanush and  Mini Studio has been co-written by Arun Narayanan and has an extensive list of stars like Balu Varghese, Santy Balachandran, Neha Iyer, Dileesh Pothan, Shammy Thilakan, Alancier Lopez, Vijayaraghavan, Sijoy Varghese, Saiju Kurupp and Manoj K Jayan playing pivotal roles.

The long list of artists means that the movie has many important characters in it, which in turn means that the story will be one that intertwines different plots into one single narrative. Tharangam: the curious case of Kallan Pavithran is the story of Kallan Pavithran, a petty thief who was cursed by God that his descendants will continue to suffer for his sin. When Pavithran persistently pushes God to forgive his descendants, God explains the situation and tells him that there is only one way out. The situation has lives of Pappan/Padmanabhan (Tovino), Joy (Balu), Malu/Malini (Santy), Omana (Neha Iyer) and Siju (Saiju Kurup) tangled into a big mess. The movie is a combination of the confusion, the uncertainty, the tension, the humour that occurs when everyone tries to untangle themselves.

Made like an entertainer that can match a Guy Ritchie movie in it's fun, style and pattern, Tharangam has Balu Varghese flawlessly hitting right chords with his comedy timings. Tovino Thomas carries forward what he had begun in Godha and has done a decent job. Even though there are some hiccups here and there, it is very clear that he has the potential to handle humour swiftly and in the process of improving himself with each film. Santy Balachandran handles her role with great skill and looks irreplaceable. Neha Nair, Sijoy Varghese, Vijayaraghavan, Alancier and Saiju Kurup play their parts convincingly and contribute in creating the desired entertainer. Cameos by Shammi Thilakan and Manoj K Jayan, and Dileesh Pothan's excellence in pulling off his character with admirable ease is a treat to watch.

Cinematography, Music - Background score and Edits are decisive in determining the extent to which a comedy thriller like Tharangam succeeds in reaching its desired excellence. Deepak D Menon has cranked the camera and displays good virtuosity in intertwining itself with Ashwin Renju's funky background scores, and the final product after Sreenath R's precise cuts is a decent and pleasing dark comedy.

Despite having every required element to create the perfect dark comedy of Malayalam, the conclusion of the movie is a disappointment considering the way things were panning out. The surprise appearance by a lead actor is not as pleasant as the makers wanted it to be, as the casting was a major mishap. The burden of a highly important character was a little too much, and the casting was a letdown.

Verdict: Tharangam's dark-comedy-thriller genre provides wholesome entertainment, making it watch-worthy!
