Ann Maria Kalippilaanu is the second directorial of Midhun Manuel Thomas, the screenwriter of the super hit Malayalam film 'Om Shanti Oshana'. Following 'Aadu oru bheekara jeevi alla, Midhun comes with a children's film written by Thomas and John Manthrichal which narrates the story of a fourth grader Ann Maria and her relationship with a trickster Gireesh.
The movie has its moments and has the good feel that is expected from a children's film. It sheds light into how one's good deeds can influence others and also lightly discusses many other social issues like right parenting, the grey side of teacher etc. The direction is average and there is scope for improvement. Even though the script has an amateurish feel, it pulls off somehow and is impressive. The casting of Leona Lishoy as Dr. Teresa Roy, Ann Maria's mother is ideal as baby Sara looks very much like the young actress.
Baby Sara, the cutie playing the title role is the main attraction of the movie and she does deliver a good performance. Sunny Wayne does his part convincingly and Aju Varghese whose character is an add on as the comic element manages to freewheel through the film with ease. Siddique steals the show with his splendid acting and Dulquer Salmaan is charming as ever in a cameo role. John Kaippallil is perfect for his role and has performed well. Leona Lishoy and Saiju Kurup ease through as Ann Maria's parents.
The cinematography by Vishnu Sharma is praiseworthy as he captures the beauty of the city and of the mighty mountains impeccably. The music and background score by Shan Rahman smoothly gel with the mood of the movie.
