Veteran actor Sumita Sanyal, who has worked in several films including Amitabh Bachchan-Rajesh Khanna starrer Anand, died last afternoon (9th July).  She was 72 years and is survived by a son. The actress was married to film editor Subodh Roy.

 

Reports say that she has been ailing for a while and cardiac arrest is said to be the reason for her demise.


Born as Manjula Sanyal, Bibhuti Laha, the director of her first film Khokababur Pratyabartan, changed her name to Sumita. The actress has worked in around 50 Bengali films and was also part of Hindi films like Anand, Guddi, Mili, Aashirwad and Mere Apne. She had also worked with Dilip Kumar in Sagina Mahato (Bengali film) and with Biswajit and Sandhya Roy in Kuheli (Bengali film). She was the heroine in Sanjeev Kumar’s Aashirwad.


Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee had also offered her condolences to the actress` family through her Twitter handle. She tweeted, “Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans.”
