Kaviko Abdul Rahman who had been ailing for some time, breathed his last early this morning. He was 79 years old and is survived a son and a daughter. His funeral is said to take place tomorrow, the 3rd June. 

 

Abdul Rahman had been teaching Tamil for university students for almost 20 years. Later, he took to writing on a full-time basis. He always believed in the unique aspects of Tamil poetry and called himself a neo-classicist.

 

He got the Sahitya Akademi award in 1999 for his collection of poems, Aalapanai. He was also awarded the State Government's 'Kalaimamani' title in 1989.

 

He was someone who did not ignore lyrics used in Tamil feature films and was of the opinion that they are also a form of poetry.  He opined that Kannadasan’s best pieces were his film songs.

 

Behindwoods mourns the death of this eminent poet and prays for his departed soul to rest in peace.
